TECHNOLOGY IS NOT ONLY COMPUTERS

                        Technology is not only computers

Biotechnology was invented even before the before the Common Era although not until the 20th century the term biotechnology was commonly used. This term was used to describe different traditional activities such as:  cheese, wine and beer making, selective breeding and even primitive plant cloning. Although these are biological and complex reactions, they do not fall under our use of the term biotechnology. According to the United States National Science Academy (USNSA), biotechnology is described as being the controlled use of cell or cellular components for a beneficial use. This new scientific branch uses more advanced techniques which help us take even greater advantages of biological process. One example is genetic engineering. This technique helps us transfer different desired genes from one organism to another one without causing any noticeable damage. In essence, biotechnology is an ever growing industry and it is very important to our lives and it will still be in 100 years´ time.

In essence, biotechnology is a modern science branch which is still developing and expanding all over the world.  This science will gain even more importance and it is regarded as being the science of the future. In addition, even more people will be able to benefit from this, and global problems like famine could come to an end. The importance of microorganisms is obvious, and if they are investigated responsibly in a short period of time we are going to depend on them for much more things. Vaccines, medicines, better food quality…are just three of the thousands of advantages that this science has, and one day, our society will enjoy every single one of them. Through research, hard work and responsibility we will take advantage of a microscopic world which has an enormous importance to us.

IT in XXI

                 Information Technology in 21st Century

Nowadays everyone uses computers, cell phones, tablets... since they make our life easier and they are simple to use. I normally use computers, cell phones and tablets on a daily basis because they are fast, easy and fun. Even my grandmother has learned to use a tablet and a smartphone.

Firstly, cell phones have substituted old fashioned analogic fixed telephones. Cell phones further evolved to smartphones which have fascinating apps, an internet application and are incredibly simple. Moreover global brands like iPhone, Blackberry, Android have created the best smartphones to use. For instance, I use a blackberry in a daily basis which helps me to communicate with my friends in a cheap way. I use three different types of smartphone instant messaging which are: whatsapp, blackberry messenger(BBM) and liveprofile(LV). Whatsapp and liveprofile allow me to communicate with iPhones and Androids which helps me communicate with even more friends. BBM is a very fancy application, but I can only communicate with other Blackberry.

Secondly, most people use computers in their leisure time or to work. Computers have begun key and central in our daily life since they do make our life easier. Software enterprises lead the benefits list, like Apple, Microsoft Windows... I use computers everyday to complete homework, disconnect from the world and to comunicate with people in social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Tuenti...

In essence, cell phones and computers are the two main developments that I use on a daily basis. Everyone should learn how to use computers and even to master some computer programs. Technology affects our present, and will affect our future.

Uses of video conferencing-Skype

Video conferencing can be used in different environments, which is one of the reasons the technology is so popular. Uses for video conferencing include business meetings, educational training or instruction and collaboration among health officials or other representatives.  video conferencing has been used in the following fields:
  • Business
  • Distance Learning
  • commuting /
  • Legal Environment
  • medicine
BUSINESS
  • Reduce travel costs.
  • Improve use of executive time.
  • Speed up decision-making.
  • Keep meetings brief and more focused than face-to-face meetings.
  • Enable top management to quickly and effectively communicate with employees sitting in multiple locations.
  • Allows virtual project management via video and data conferencing with geographically dispersed peer groups at short notice.
  • Provides an effective way of delivering cost-efficient training to individuals without the requirement to consistently travel to central locations.
  • Creates a medium for conducting interviews.
Distance Learning Courses
  • Saving travel time and expenses.
  • Increasing an instructor's audience.
  • Maintaining the ability for interaction between teachers and students.
  • Traditional courses.
  • Connecting with guest speakers and experts.
  • Multi-school project collaboration.
  • Enabling teachers to share information and team-up with teachers in remote sites.
  • Virtual field trips to museums, zoos, aquariums, institutions and other interesting locations that are geographically distant from the school.
COMMUTING
Working out of home has never been easier or more practical. Videoconferencing makes it possible to stay connected with people in a very real way. Videoconferencing allows users to save resources by meeting with clients and/or colleagues via videoconference. This reduces travel expenses, while maintaining face-to-face contact.
For a minimal cost, it is possible to set-up a fully functional videoconferencing system that works in a professional and reliable way from your home office.
LEGAL ENVIRONMENTThe use of videoconferencing technology is becoming more prevalent in today’s courtrooms. Videoconferencing systems are used to enable testifying witnesses to “appear” in court without having to travel to the courtroom. Expert witnesses, prisoners, and various other witnesses can provide the same testimonies from remote locations. From the prison, prisoners will see and hear everything that takes place in the courtroom and will be able to answer questions posed to them by the presiding judges and lawyers. Videoconferencing in the court system offers significant cost savings and improved security by reducing the need for high-security prisoner transport. The entire courtroom experience will be made shorter, safer and more cost-effective.
MEDICINE
There are times when a person needs medical advice but is unable to visit their personal physician or even more likely, a specialist. In such situations using videoconferencing can make all the difference. A patient in a rural location can easily “meet” with a specialist from anywhere in the world. Videoconferencing enables patients to get the necessary information and expert guidance they need quickly and easily. While videoconferencing cannot replace all visits to a medical professional, in some instances it can be the only method of meeting with a specific doctor, and in a difficult situation it may prove to be a lifesaver.

Harware Requirements for Skype

Necessities

  • The things that are absolutely needed to run Skype are a working microphone and working speakers. This could consist of a microphone plugged into your computer and your standard desktop speakers, or it could be a headset purchased especially for Skype. You just need some way of talking and listening.
Many laptops have microphones and speakers built in. If you have Skype installed, try a test call to see if your setup is currently working

Webcams

  • A webcam is not necessary to use Skype or even to see other people in a video-conference. A webcam is needed for other people to see you. Many laptops have webcams built in, but if yours does not there are many external webcams on the market, many for less than $30.

Internet connection

  • Skype recommends a broadband Internet connection for audio and video conferencing. A satellite connection could work, but not necessarily consistently. Dialup works only with text messages.

Other Hardware

  • If the computer Skype is to be run on is really old, it might lack the computing power to run Skype. Skype recommends a 1 GHz processor and at least 256 MB of ram.

Without a Computer

  • For running Skype without a computer there are a variety of phones on the market and even some devices that let you use traditional phones to make calls. Check out skype.com for a decent selection of USB-, Ethernet- and WiFi-based phones.
Some cell phones can run Skype, including the iPhone. Check out skype.com to see if a given cell phone is compatible.
